Classic Cosmopolitan cocktail

The iconic cocktail of the 90s, made world-famous by 'Sex and the City'. The secret of the perfect Cosmo is balance: it can't be too sweet or too sour. The pale pink colour comes from the cranberry juice, but the backbone of the flavour is provided by the purity of the vodka and the citrus oils of the orange liqueur. Shaking here not only cools but also aerates the drink, making it silkier.

Ingredients

Equipment Needed

  • Shaker (or any sealable jar)
  • Y-peeler (for the orange peel)
  • Chilled cocktail glass (Martini or Coupe)
  • Fine strainer

Instructions

1

Chill the glass with ice or put it in the freezer for a few minutes.

Tip: A cold glass prevents the poured drink from starting to warm up immediately due to room temperature (thermal inertia).
2

Fill the shaker with ice, then pour in the vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, and lime juice.

Tip: Always start filling with the cheapest ingredient (lime) and finish with the most expensive (alcohol), so if you mess up the ratios at the start, the drink isn't wasted.
3

Close the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the metal side frosts over.

Tip: During shaking, tiny air bubbles enter the liquid (aeration), making the texture of the drink creamier and softer, and the flavours meld better.
4

Strain the drink into the chilled glass. Use a fine strainer to prevent ice shards getting into the drink.

Tip: Ice shards floating on the surface would dilute the drink further and disturb the sipping experience.
5

Hold the orange peel over the glass, coloured side down, and squeeze it suddenly so the oil mist falls onto the drink, then drop it in.

Tip: The essential oils in the orange peel (mainly limonene) are released explosively, and being oily, they stay on the surface, so you smell them with every sip.

Recipe FAQ

Why isn't it cold enough?
You probably used too little ice, or didn't shake it long enough. The ice must completely fill the shaker.
